Possible Causes for Chest Pain or Chest Discomfort

If you are suffering from chest pain or chest discomfort, there a few things that may be going on. No matter what the case is, it is extremely important you speak with a cardiologist to determine what is causing the pain and to determine the best treatment.

Heart Attack

One major warning symptom of a heart attack is when a person experiences chest pain or chest discomfort. Your chest doctor in Dickenson or another city in the Houston area can tell you if you are in danger of having a heart attack based on your current health issues and symptoms. However, if you are having chest pain it is extremely important to call 9-1-1 or other emergency services immediately. Do not attempt to drive yourself to the hospital. Instead, wait for the ambulance to come to you and follow any instructions the operator tells you to do.

While both men and women can experience chest pain when having a heart attack, women are more likely to suffer from other symptoms, such as shortness of breath, back or jaw pain, and shortness of breath. In addition to chest pain, other heart attack symptoms can include:

  • Sweating
  • Sudden weakness or lightheadedness
  • A fast or irregular heartbeat
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Shortness of breath
  • Pressure, pain, or an overall strange feeling in the jaw, neck, back, upper belly, or in one or both shoulders or arms

Heart Disease

If you experience chest pain or it gets worse when you are exercising, after a large meal, due to stress but it seems to go away after some rest, you may have another form of heart disease. If you are currently not being treated for angina or coronary artery disease, you should call 9-1-1 immediately.

Other Potential Causes of Chest Pain or Chest Discomfort

Even if you are experiencing chest pain or discomfort, that does not always mean that there is something wrong with your heart. There are a handful of other things that could be going on. You may have a broken rib that is causing pain or shingles that is causing a burning pain in the chest or ribs prior to noticing a rash develop.

There are more serious problems that could be the cause of your chest pain, such as:

  • A collapsed lung
  • Lung cancer
  • Blood clot
  • Diseases of the spine due to a pinched nerve

No matter what, it is best to visit a doctor to determine what is causing your chest pain or discomfort.
